However, just because your goals are important to you does not guarantee that they will receive the time, attention, and sustenance they deserve. Life becomes hectic, work piled up, and many of us put our goals on hold for far too long. As we said in our issue on re-engaging with work, a recent Gallup survey shows that employee disengagement is at an all-time high in the United States, with a main contributor to that trend being an inability to find meaning in one’s work.

Reconnecting with your work goals can be a significant step in renewing your career path. That clarity may be the key to not only increasing your job satisfaction but also moving forward in your career. Let’s investigate.

The first step in re-centering your career goals is to define them. After all, working toward your objectives is easier when you understand what they are and why you want to reach them.

Spend some time thinking about your career goals. This will be different for everyone, but some common career objectives include changing employment, pursuing professional advancement, and gaining job stability. Try to be as explicit as possible so that you can clearly define your goal, such as “obtain IT certification” or “learn about prompt engineering.”

As the expression goes, “Out of sight, out of mind.” Making both tangible and figurative space for your goals will help you stay focused on them and avoid losing sight of them.

There are numerous methods to incorporate your professional goals into your daily life, from creating weekly review reminders to decorating your workspace with imagery. Don’t be afraid to mix and match approaches or experiment with different techniques; you want to center your goals in your life, so do whatever works best for you. If you need some inspiration, consider some of these popular techniques:

Set aside time: Scheduling time in your calendar to examine and plan your goals can help you remember them. Consider setting phone reminders, automating email notifications, and placing post-it notes across your workspace to remind yourself to think about your professional goals on a frequent basis.

Visualize your goals for inspiration: Visualizing your objectives can help them feel more real and motivate you to take action toward realizing them. Have fun: display a vision board of your perfect career in your office, change your screensaver to a goal-related image, and keep a productivity notebook to help you remember your professional goals. Whatever works.

Get an accountability partner: Working with another person to serve as an accountability partner will help you give your goals the attention they require. While a professional mentor is preferable, don’t be hesitant to work with a colleague or friend if it’s more practical or comfortable.
