The singer of hits including Houdini, One Kiss, and Training Season was born in London to Kosovan-Albanian parents.
Dua Lipa, a singer, has stated that she is “feeling grateful” after receiving Kosovo citizenship from the president.
The 29-year-old was born in London to Kosovan-Albanian parents, Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, and moved to the country’s capital, Pristina, at the age of 11, when her family returned after Kosovo declared independence in 2008, before returning to London aged 15.
Lipa wrote on Instagram: “Feeling so grateful to have been awarded my Kosovan citizenship by our president, Vjosa Osmani.”
Vjosa Osmani, Kosovo’s president, released a photo of herself presenting the singer with a certificate of citizenship, captioned “Welcome home, Dua.”
She went on to say, “It is a great honor today, by presidential decree, to confer citizenship to Dua Lipa, one of the most prominent cultural and artistic figures in our country’s history.
“Dua and Kosovo were always inseparable. She has been and continues to be one of the most powerful voices on the world’s greatest stages, making history with her accomplishments and inspiring millions of people worldwide.
“We are eternally grateful to Dua for what she has done and continues to do for Kosovo, our youth, our art, and our country’s international image. Dua, Kosovo is always proud of you.”
Lipa was greeted at her initiation ceremony by a group of children clad in white who sang her 2020 UK smash tune Levitating.
It comes after the singer attended on Friday at the country’s Sunny Hill festival, which she founded in 2018, and sang the song Era in Albanian with her father.
In a post on X, she expressed her feelings on the performance: “Sharing this night with you all, in the city that shaped me, surrounded by so much energy, joy, and pride … it’s hard to put into words. Performing for you, and sharing the stage with my father, Dukagjin Lipa, was an experience I will never forget.
“I feel so incredibly lucky and grateful, and we still have two more nights to celebrate together.”
Bajram Begaj, Albania’s president, granted the musician Albanian citizenship in November 2022.
Lipa has scored four UK No. 1 singles and two UK No. 1 albums since her debut in 2013. She is most known for the songs Training Season, New Rules, and One Kiss, which she collaborated on with DJ Calvin Harris.
