What is Art?What is Art?

As a curator, art historian, and educator, I understand that answering this issue is not an easy assignment. It’s not just a matter of personal opinion; it’s an issue that has sparked centuries of debate, research, and even conflict.

The ancient Greeks did not regard all creative acts to be “high art.” Poetry and music were highly valued, although painting and sculpture were regarded as manual crafts rather than intellectual activities. The visual arts rose to prominence throughout the Renaissance, and by the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, artists were pushing the boundaries of what art might be, from abstract painting to conceptual installations, performance, and even everyday things reused as art.

The truth is that the definition of art is constantly evolving. Definitions change, and with each movement comes dispute. What was formerly dismissed as “not art” (think Impressionism, street art, or even photography) might become extremely important later on. That’s why this issue is central to Curated Tastes: it’s about connecting with art, interrogating it, and understanding how our perspectives change.

And what better way to discover this than to experience art firsthand? Join us on our art excursions to meet curators, artists, and other art lovers. Explore murals, exhibitions, and hidden gems throughout Vancouver, and most importantly, speak about them! Art is for everyone, and we are dedicated to making it feel alive and accessible.

For those who want to go deeper, I also teach fascinating and enjoyable art history classes that provide context and insight into the changing meanings of art across time. Whether you’re an artist, a casual spectator, or simply interested, there’s room for you in our discussions.

We’d want to share our knowledge and hear your comments, because art is more than simply what we see; it’s also about what we experience together.
