Google has announced the December 2025 core update via its Search Status Dashboard.

The rollout began at 9:25 a.m. Pacific Time on December 11, 2025.

This is Google’s third core update in 2025, following the March and June core releases earlier this year.

What’s New

The upgrade is listed as a “incident affecting ranking” on Google’s status dashboard.

According to the corporation, the rollout “may take up to three weeks to complete.”

Core updates are substantial adjustments to Google’s ranking processes that aim to improve search results overall. Unlike specific updates that target spam or specific ranking indicators, fundamental updates influence how Google’s systems evaluate material throughout the web.

2025 Core Update Timeline

The December upgrade follows two other core changes this year.

The March 2025 core upgrade went live from March 13 to 27, taking 14 days to finish. SEO tracking providers reported volatility similar to the December 2024 core update.

The June 2025 core upgrade was available from June 30 to July 17, lasting around 16 days. SEO data sources reported that it was one of the largest core changes in recent memory. During this rollout, certain sites that had previously been affected by the September 2023 Helpful Content Update recovered partially.

Documentation Update for Continuous Changes.

Google revised its core updates documentation two days prior to this core update, adding new language concerning ongoing algorithm adjustments.

The modified documentation now reads:

“However, you don’t always need to wait for a significant core upgrade to experience the benefits of your modifications. We are constantly updating our search algorithms, including tiny fundamental updates. These modifications aren’t announced because they aren’t immediately obvious, but they are another option for your content to boost its ranking.

Google noted that the modification was intended to indicate that content updates can result in ranking changes without waiting for the next scheduled update.

Why This Matters

This modification is anticipated to have a significant impact on ranking fluctuations in the coming weeks.

Core modifications can cause ranking changes for pages that were not doing anything wrong. Google has frequently indicated that pages that lose exposure following a core upgrade do not necessarily have issues that need to be resolved. The systems are reassessing content in relation to what else is available.
