What is Percentage Calculator ?

In mathematics, a percentage is a quantity or ratio that is a fraction of 100. It is one of several approaches for representing a dimensionless connection between two numbers; others include ratios, fractions, and decimals. Percentages are commonly represented by the symbol “%” following the number. They can also be represented by adding “percent” or “pct” after the integer. For example, 35% is comparable to the decimal 0.35 or fractions.

Percentage formula

Although the % formula can be stated in several ways, it is fundamentally an algebraic equation with three values.

P × V1 = V2

P represents the %, V1 is the initial value that the percentage will change, and V2 is the outcome of the percentage acting on V1. To compute the result, the calculator automatically converts the entered percentage to a decimal. However, when solving for the %, the number given will be the actual percentage rather than its decimal form.

EX: P × 30 = 1.5

If solving manually, the formula requires the percentage in decimal form, therefore multiply the solution for P by 100 to convert it to a percent. This is essentially what the above calculator does, with the exception that it accepts percentages rather than decimals.

Percentage difference formula

To calculate the percentage difference between two values, divide the absolute value of the difference between two numbers by their average. Multiplying the result by 100 gives the solution in percent rather than decimal form. Please refer to the equation below for explanation.

Percentage change formula

Percentage growth and reduction are computed by subtracting two values and comparing them to the initial value. Mathematically, this entails taking the absolute value of the difference between two values and dividing the result by the starting value, so estimating how much the initial value has changed.

The percentage increase calculator above calculates an increase or decrease in a certain percentage of the entered number. It entails translating a percentage to its decimal counterpart and then subtracting (decreasing) or adding (increasing) the decimal equivalent from and to one, respectively. Multiplying the original number by this value will cause the number to either increase or drop by the specified percentage. See the sample below for clarity.

EX: 500 increased by 10% (0.1)

500 × (1 + 0.1) = 550

500 decreased by 10%

500 × (1 – 0.1) = 450
